The Hardest Time of the Year…
In the life of a Southern farmer, August is the hardest month of the year…
We’ve been working our asses off every day since mid-March, the heat of the summer is brutal on the body, no matter in how good a shape you are, the kids are going back to school so there are a million errands to run and… you CAN NOT take a break because if you don’t plant the whole garden with fall plants and seeds, by mid September it will be too late to do so.
It’s a major push. It’s what makes farming hard… You have to keep going even tho you are falling apart.
Add to that being a single mom of four kids who don’t want much interaction with their father (unfortunately), and to say that I was overwhelmed the past few weeks is an understatement…
But it’s not my first rodeo as they say… I knew it was coming (minus the police dep. and DSS 🤦♀️ but that’s a story for another time…), so I put on my big girl undies on, and said, “August, bring it on!”
I was all in my head… goin going going (last week I realized that I didn’t send an email as I was setting up in Hall’s Way! Literally brain fog!)… Sunday is my mowing and landscaping day cause your girl here has a slight OCD problem, and if the grass touches my ankles, I freak out and can’t focus on anyyyything…
So complete exhaustion and all, I was riding my mower to the farm from my house (I do it on Sunday cause the dangerous road is quieter), and as the farm came into view, my emotions rose to my throat and threatened to choke me…
It takes me four hours to mow this field. Four hours. Last Sunday it was just… done.
I didn’t know who did it, I didn’t ask anyone to, I’m constantly in and out, so I couldn’t figure out how I didn’t see anyone do it…
Sweet Kristie and her husband Kirk did it while I was at the market on Saturday!
The day before, they stopped by the stand, and we were walking around the garden talking about everything, including the grass. The next day, while I was at the market, they loaded their trailer with their mowers and drove to the farm to cut the grass 🤯😭🤯😭.
You guys, when I tell you that we have THE BEST community here, I mean it with all my heart. When people ask me why I wouldn’t go sell at the Chapel Hill or the Durham Farmer’s Market… because you know, you can make so much more money there… This! This is my reason. You. The relationships I’ve made through our tiny market can not be valued by any amount of money.
Over the years, I’ve met so many amazing customers that become so much more than that! People will show up to help me build anything, design anything, wire anything, move anything… They’ll hand me money in an envelope with a heartfelt note. They watched my kids when they were tiny so I could go to market, they helped me install a stove in the house so we’ll be warm in winter, they tilled the ground for me, they mowed the grass…
Thank you! From the bottom of my heart, thank you to each and every one of you. You should know that I am not big on human interaction in general… After all, I grew up in the barn with the horses and I spend most of the day in the field with plants, that’s where I’ve always been the most comfortable… And yet, I can’t wait for Saturday! Because I get to see you guys! I truly love you, and I am so grateful that somehow, even though I was born and raised on the other side of the world, I ended up here, with you!
Purple Sweet Potatoes…

I will be heading to Israel in a couple of weeks, and this time, my mother is especially excited cause I’ll get to celebrate Rosh Hashanah with the family.
It’s a big Jewish holiday, maybe the biggest… Basically, the Jewish New Year. Just like here, over in Israel at the moment is fig season and just past the honey harvest season.
It’s a tradition to make a honey cake for the holiday table, and so, a few years ago, when I was there for the holiday, I took the task upon myself. BUT, I couldn’t just leave the figs out… there were so many of them… so I made up a honey and fig cake. It turned out amazing, and you should totally try it!

Welcome!
Hi friends! I am so excited that you are all here on this email list so I can communicate with you directly. I am going to try to send one email a week with farm and market updates.
This email list is powered by Substack. If you’ve never heard of it, Substack is a platform that combines social media, podcasting, video production, writing, and email communication without being dependent on an algorithm.
It helps us, content creators and business owners, to create content and deliver it to you directly. If you are in my space, we can communicate without a robot between us. Yay!
It also helps us get support from the community. This email list is completely free, and if you want more updates from me, you can download the Substack app and follow along there as well; however, many people ask me how they can support the farm. Substack offers a paid membership option as well. You can learn more about it by clicking the button below:
