A Break…

Every June, we go camping. Usually shortly after the kids get out of school, we head to the mountains for almost a week at the New River State Park. Tents, fires, tubing down the river… It’s our sort of vacation.
Those of you who know me know that I have a slight OCD problem 😬
This summer, because the store building was supposed to arrive at the farm in the second week of June, I didn’t book our usual camping. The thought of the delivery driver placing the building 2 inches off my imaginary straight line (that, I know, doesn’t really exist…) was just too much to bear.
I thought about marking the spot with flags and stakes and ropes and making a friend be on call to appear in the field in case the building is delivered while I’m sunbathing by a river… But I know myself too well at this point… If it didn’t make sense to me when I came back, because it was 2.3 inches to the left, I’d suffer forever, the energy will be messed up, and my life will not be able to proceed the way I plan.
Ok, a bit dramatic, but you’re getting the point.
So I told the kids that there was no river camping this summer and dealt with the backlash of angry creatures and heavy, morbid guilt.
But then, what do you know… God sent me, through our amazing farmer’s market, an amazing couple who own a farm on the river… wait for it, wait, wait, wait… 15 minutes down the road!!
Honah Lee Farm is an amazing place! If you are a primitive camper like us, you can find them on HipCamp here.
We ended up by the river for a couple of days, feet in the cool water, kids climbing waterfalls, marshmallows roasted, and burnt hot dogs.
It was beautiful and so so needed. Thank you, Brian, Lee, and Mike! We’ll definitely be back.
And what do you know… A minute after we left the camp on Monday, I got a call that the building would be delivered on Thursday. So, as you are reading this, I am probably making a delivery driver question his choice of occupation. I am 100% sure he’ll be so happy to never see me again.
Oh well…
Recipe to Try…

Lots of tomatoes are coming our way, and I make sure to bring all of them with me to market… Even the green ones. Or, maybe especially the green ones, because you can’t find them at the store.
Two recipes you should try… If you like pickles, try pickling green tomatoes. I know you are probably going HUH?? But I’m sharing anyway. You can find the tutorial on the blog HERE.
And then there is the classic… The dish I wait a whole year to make and eat…
Fried Green Tomatoes.
I did not know that this dish existed until I moved to the American South. I think that the first time I made it was when I was left with a bunch of green tomatoes at the end of the season a few years ago, and didn’t know what to do with them.
Since that first time, my life has changed forever. I WAIT for green tomatoes like a hawk waiting for a field mouse to make a move…
I don’t have a recipe for this dish on the blog, but here is one that looks good » https://www.southernliving.com/recipes/fried-green-tomatoes
Also, if you haven’t watched the movie (Fried Green Tomatoes)… It’s one of my favorites! I think that it’s available on Netflix.
If you are new here…
Welcome!
Hi friends! I am so excited that you are all here on this email list so I can communicate with you directly. I am going to try to send one email a week with farm and market updates.
This email list is powered by Substack. If you’ve never heard of it, Substack is a platform that combines social media, podcasting, video production, writing, and email communication without being dependent on an algorithm.
It helps us, content creators and business owners, to create content and deliver it to you directly. If you are in my space, we can communicate without a robot between us. Yay!
It also helps us get support from the community. This email list is completely free, and if you want more updates from me, you can download the Substack app and follow along there as well; however, many people ask me how they can support the farm. Substack offers a paid membership option as well. You can learn more about it by clicking the button below:

Kismet Farm is also on TikTok! If you use TikTok, join me there for farm updates and gardening tips and tricks. Click here to find me on TikTok.
That’s it for now, friends! Thanks for your support. See you at the markets.
